Soundscapes Week One - Mountain Waves
I finally had some free time to get to the fun part of my Genuis Hour project, this is what I’ve been most excited about since I started this blog exercise. It’s been too long since I’ve created anything just for fun and I miss it. This topic - connecting music with imagination, has reignited my relationship with the mysterious source of creativity we are all connected to. I believe it would be beneficial for all of us to intentionally carve out time and space to cultivate this connection.
The playlist I chose to listen to this week is by traumscape on Youtube.
It is a steady flow of rhythmic drumming and ambient background sounds and quickly got me into a creative flow.
After listening for 30 min, I drew some warmup sketches with pencil and kept the music on to stay in the flow. I liked where one sketch was going so that is the one I followed. It became a whale swimming in the sky with mountains in the background. My art teacher would insist on giving this drawing a creative name so I’ll call it Mountain Waves.

I was wondering if anyone else has studied this connection between sound and imagination and I found a great interview with artist and sound healer, Lavender Suarez on Art Zealous. I like this quote from the article:
Lavenders book Transcendent Waves looks like it would be a great addition to any creativity library. Here is her website.
Something that happens when I let my imagination wander is that I experience synchronicities in my life. I think I’ve already had one with this project, I recently started reading The Dreaming Way by one of my favourite authors Toko-Pa Turner In the first chapter she introduces the Imaginal realm and how to connect to it through your dreams. I took this photo of a page because I thought it was apt for this blog. I think I’ll add a dream journal to this musical imagination project.

I was wondering if anyone else has studied this connection between sound and imagination and I found a great interview with artist and sound healer, Lavender Suarez on Art Zealous. I like this quote from the article:
Everyone’s connection to art and how it makes them feel is a highly personalized and delicate process. All objects have a natural vibration occurring which is often inaudible to us. A painting hanging in a gallery may seem silent, but one can consider the sounds surrounding how that work was made to further connect to it’s aural qualities.
In “Transcendent Waves,” I encourage creatives to consider the tools they use, and the sounds that surround them while they’re in the process of creating. Have you ever listened to the sound of your paint brush bristles while painting? What about the chiseling of a marble sculpture? To translate “loud” and “soft” to visual artworks is ultimately in the eye and ear of the beholder and how they connect with a creative work.
